We have lost another wonderful elder, less than three weeks after the death of his wife. Omwami Enoch Lugimbirwa of Ruharo, Mburara died at about 1:30 AM EST on Tuesday January 25, 2022. He was 101 years old.
When I last shared time with Mr. Lugimbirwa in January 2018, he was a very energetic 97-year-old whose ever-present smile and easy laughter reflected his great love for humanity. A very dear brother in Christ, Mr. Lugimbirwa was a refined gentleman who was a much-loved member and pillar of the Anglican Church that he has served with great devotion.
He has lived and served in Mburara, Nkore for close to 75 years and, whereas he was born to Baganda parents in Buganda, Mr. Lugimbirwa was an adopted Munyankore. More than that, he was a moral reference in the community and a very reliable friend of my wife’s family.
To share time with him was always uplifting. Gifted with a sharp intellect and a beautiful singing voice, he was a joy to be with during worship at St. James’ Cathedral, Mburara.
His death, coming so soon after that of his wife and that of Mr. Phinehas Nyenda, has severely pruned the remaining original converts to Christ during the East African Revival Movement of the 1930s and 40s. However, his legacy of service and evangelism is rich and is good reason for us to be very thankful to the Lord.
We praise the Lord for Mr. Lugimbirwa’s life and service. Our thoughts are with his family and the Christians with whom he has shared his life and testimony. Ruharo and Mburara will be different without him, but it is well.
