To my ears, Edward Lee Morgan was the best of the best trumpeters in the Hard Bop idiom. His very premature death, gunned down by his spouse while he was at work at Slug's Saloon, a club in New York City, ended a very brief but brilliant career of a young man that had enjoyed great respect by his elders in Jazz. It was one of the greatest losses to the music.
Lee Morgan's recordings as a leader, and his many recorded contributions as a sideman, are truly my kind of music. This is one example. Find it. Listen to it. Then let's talk.
