The Republic of Iceland, a former colony of Denmark, is a fascinating little country, with one of the most beautiful, cleanest, greenest and safest capital cities in the world.
Country area: 103,000 sq. km. (a little less than half the size of the Kingdom of Buganda.)
National Population: 364,000
Greater Reykjavik Population: 217,000
GDP:US$26 billion
GDP per capita: US$70,000
Icelandic COVID-19 data today:
Confirmed cases: 1,648
Recovered:688
In hospital: 40
In ICU: 11
In Isolation: 954
Quarantined: 3,940
So why has the tiny nation, a high number of identified cases, NOT gone into lockdown mode? Its approach has a lot to teach us. PREPAREDNESS. Iceland, which already had an action plan for a pandemic such as we are in, implemented a policy of early identification, early isolation. To do this, they have been testing everybody who wants it. They have banned gatherings of more than 20 people.
One very big lesson from Iceland's universal screening: 50% (fifty percent) of people who tested positive had NO symptoms.
Food for thought.
