The main nationalities (or ethnic communities) in Kigyezi, a district that was created in 1909 and became officially incorporated in the British Uganda Protectorate in 1911, are the Bafumbira, Banyarwanda, Bahororo, Bakiga and Batwa. Each community is divided into clans and the latter are subdivided into sub-clans.
This page presents the clans and subclans of the Bakiga and Bahororo. The clans of the Bafumbira/Banyarwanda will be presented separately.
Banyakigyezi youth who were born abroad may find this very helpful as they get into the years of dating and marriage. Consanguinity (where a couple are biologically related) increases the risk of offspring inheriting bad and sometimes disorder-inducing genes. When in doubt, ask.
